SUMMARY:Food Allergy Awareness Month 2026
DESCRIPTION:During National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month\, we also focus on food allergy awareness. \nA food allergy occurs when the body’s immune system sees a certain food as harmful and reacts by causing allergic symptoms. Foods that cause allergic reactions are allergens. \nAbout 20 million people in the U.S. have food allergies (16 million adults and 4 million children). We commonly hear about children with food allergies. But people can develop a food allergy at any age. Many adults develop food allergies even without a prior history of allergies. \nThere is no cure for food allergies. The only way to prevent an allergic reaction is to avoid the food you are allergic to. The good news is with the right steps\, you can manage your food allergies and live a full life. \nFind food allergy awareness information and social media tools on our Kids with Food Allergies website.

SUMMARY:Type 2 Inflammation Awareness Week 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) designates May 18-22 to be Type 2 Inflammation Awareness Week. Conditions such as asthma\, allergies\, eczema\, eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)\, and nasal polyps are often caused by type 2 inflammation. \n“A common thread among asthma and many allergic diseases is type 2 inflammation\,” said Melanie Carver\, Chief Mission Officer at AAFA. “We want to take this week to focus attention on how these conditions are linked together. Understanding the underlying causes and common triggers of these related chronic conditions is paramount to improve the health of over 100 million people in the United States.” \nWhat Is Type 2 Inflammation? \nEveryone has something called a type 2 immune response. When your body senses certain kinds of “intruders\,” it sends out specific immune cells to fight a battle against the intruders. In some people\, these immune cells mistakenly overreact and can end up damaging the body itself. This overactive immune response is called type 2 inflammation. \nWhat Diseases Are Connected by Type 2 Inflammation? \n\nAsthma\nAtopic dermatitis\, a type of eczema\nFood allergies\nEosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)\nPollen food allergy syndrome (PFAS)\, also known as oral allergy syndrome (OAS)\nNasal polyps\, also known as chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps\nPrurigo nodularis\n\nIt is common for people with type 2 inflammation to have more than one type 2 inflammatory disease. If you have symptoms like coughing\, itching\, congestion\, sneezing\, or difficulty eating foods\, talk with your doctor. \n“In many cases\, early diagnosis can make a big difference. This starts with awareness and recognition\,” said Carver.  “Type 2 inflammatory conditions impact millions of people\, but there are options available for managing and caring for these conditions.” \nWhat Triggers Type 2 Inflammatory Diseases? \nType 2 inflammation can be triggered by allergens\, irritants\, and infections. One common allergen in particular—pollen—is a culprit for worsening many of these conditions. While many people associate pollen with nasal allergies\, pollen can trigger several conditions associated with type 2 inflammation. These include asthma\, atopic dermatitis\, EoE\, nasal polyps\, and pollen food allergy syndrome. \nFor more information\, visit:\nMay Is Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month: aafa.org/awareness\nType 2 Inflammation: aafa.org/type2

SUMMARY:World EoE Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:AAFA joins the EoE Day Alliance in recognizing World Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) Day on May 22\, 2026. The theme selected for World EoE Day 2026 is “Food Should Not Hurt.” \nWhat is eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)? \nEosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic (long-term) allergic disease that affects the esophagus – the tube that carries the water and food you swallow to the stomach. When you have EoE\, eosinophils\, a type of white blood cell\, build up in the lining of the esophagus. Allergies\, mainly to foods\, cause this buildup\, and it can lead to swelling\, injury\, and inflammation. With EoE\, swallowing can become difficult\, or you might feel like food is getting stuck in your throat. \n#EoEDay aims to: \n\nRaise awareness of EoE and its symptoms\nEncourage people to seek medical advice for signs like difficulty swallowing or persistent reflux\nAdvocate for better care\, research\, and access to treatment

SUMMARY:AAFA Remembrance Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:On May 28\, 2026\, of National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month\, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) and our division Kids with Food Allergies (KFA) are holding a Remembrance Day in honor of family members and loved ones who’ve passed from asthma or anaphylaxis. We also take time to remember other people who have needlessly been lost to preventable deaths. \nOn average\, 9 people in the U.S. die from asthma each day. A few hundred die each year because of serious allergic reactions\, called anaphylaxis [anna-fih-LACK-sis]. Most of these deaths were preventable. We believe one life lost to asthma or anaphylaxis is one too many. \nOn this day\, we reflect on our mission to save lives and reduce the burden of these diseases on individuals\, families\, and caregivers. \nWe dedicate May 28 as a time to celebrate and honor lives lost and to continue to make a difference in memory of the people who live in our hearts forever. \nIf you would like to honor someone on Remembrance Day\, send us a message at: stories@aafa.org.
